What is Immunohistochemistry (IHC)?

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a technique used to study the presence, distribution, and localization of antigens within tissue sections by utilizing interactions between antibodies and antigens. In medical diagnosis, IHC is commonly employed to identify tissue irregularities, particularly in diseases like cancer. It offers valuable insights that complement data obtained through other methodologies. During an IHC staining procedure, specific antibodies are utilized to target the antigen of interest. Detection of this interaction can be achieved through chromogenic or fluorescent systems. Chromogenic detection involves an enzyme-conjugated antibody that produces a visible color change upon exposure to a chromogen, while fluorescent detection utilizes antibodies conjugated to fluorescent markers.
